We answer your questions

We answer your questions

Of course you can. We want you to pick and mix the projects that fit with your brand values. We have put together a bundle because we (and our clever science board) know this collection of projects packs a massive climate punch. You can also add projects as you go along your journey to becoming climate positive.

How do I know what I am investing in is being done?

We have teamed up with Satsure for this very reason because we want to make sure you can 100% trust that all your assets are where we say they are. On your profile you will also be able to see monthly updates. We want to make our climate solution as tangible as possible, so you can be confident about what you are investing in.

How do I know these projects are actually helping climate change?

We know because we checked. This is why we have an independent science board because we knew people like you would be concerned about this – and we understand why. This is why we also want to make our climate solution as tangible as possible, so you can be confident about what you are investing in. Our science board have confirmed the impact of all of our projects so we can be confident and so can you.

In general though nature based solutions can help to address the climate crisis in three main ways:

1. Capturing and storing additional carbon from the atmosphere as well as storing existing carbon
2. Reducing GHGs related to land use changes
3. Improving the resilience of ecosystems and communities

What is the difference between a project and an Earthly bundle?

The Earthly bundle is a group of projects that we have selected that work together to pack a bigger carbon punch. The current bundle is tree planting and protection because we think you can’t have one without the other. You can support the individual projects as well – do what works for you!

How much carbon do mangroves sequester?

Mangroves are a particularly important blue carbon system, with scientists believing that blue carbon ecosystems sequester two to four times more carbon than terrestrial forests. The mangroves we plant through our project partner Eden Reforestation Projects sequester on average 308kg of carbon over their 25 year growth life.

What is stopping the trees that are being planted from being cut down again?

Good question. We cannot say that 100% of the trees planted will not be cut down or destroyed in some other way (fires, flooding etc) but our partner Eden Reforestation Projects work carefully with all levels of government to secure written agreements to show the reforested areas are protected in perpetuity. Also because they work with local people there is an economic incentive to keep the trees standing, they also make sure 10% of the trees planted are agroforestry species (food, fodder etc) to ensure these can become a sustainable income in the future as well as providing food and helping with poverty alleviation.

Why do you not just plant trees? Isn't that the most important solution?

Nature-based solutions involve way more than just trees and we feel it is important to recognise this. Some of the different areas that Natural Climate Solutions focus on today are; reforestation, forest protection, blue carbon, agriculture, wetlands and peatlands.

Why do you only support nature-based solutions?

“One third of the greenhouse gas mitigation required between now and 2030 can be provided by carbon drawdown through natural climate solutions”. (Griscom 2019)

We think that pretty much sums it up. There is loads of evidence to suggest the importance of natural climate solutions, and the role they could play in addressing the climate crisis, however there continues to be a lack of investment and funding – Earthly is committed to changing that.

What are the principles of Nature-based solutions?

There are four many principles that nature-based solutions should follow. Here we break them down:

1. They should not be used in place of emission cuts – nature-based solutions, although a powerful solution, should not be used as an alternative to cutting emissions. They should be used in parallel with emission reduction policies.

2. The conservation and protection of existing ecosystems should be at their heart – protecting some of the world’s most vital ecosystems is as important as reforesting already degraded areas.

3. Always be socially responsible – true sustainability can only happen when local communities are fully engaged and benefit from the social, economic and ecological factors these ecosystems provide. Indigenious peoples need to be fully engaged and involved with decisions regarding their land with full respect shown to their rights and leadership.

4. And finally be ecologically responsible – NbS need to be founded on rigorous ecological principles that respect the native biodiversity of the area.

What is a carbon footprint?

When we discuss the carbon footprint of something, we’re referring to Mike Berners-Lee’s definition: ‘it is the best estimate that we can get of the full climate change impact of something’. It’s useful to note from the outset that any carbon footprint, no matter how accurate or detailed the calculations are, is not always going to be 100% correct – but it will be the best estimation. We also know that nobody is going to have a perfect carbon footprint, but everybody can reach a climate positive lifestyle through nature-based solutions.

What is a carbon offset?

A carbon offset is a ‘measurable, quantifiable, and trackable unit of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions’. In order to ensure carbon offsets are creating real and progressive climate impacts, the emissions they claim to reduce must be:
additional, real, measurable, have no leakage, permanent and verifiable.

We go into the real real sciencey stuff here if you’re interested in learning more.

Aren't offsets just covering up the problem?

In an ideal world we would all stop producing greenhouse gas emissions, but such a dramatic move would bring other consequences. We need to reduce our emissions but also consider development alongside the UN Sustainable Development Goals for example, and in doing this there are going to be trade offs. We know offsets – especially nature-based ones that Earthly supports – can be used alongside other emissions reduction techniques to help companies bridge the transition towards a zero carbon economy.

We know offsets and especially nature-based ones that Earthly supports can be used alongside other emissions reduction techniques to help companies bridge the transition towards a zero carbon economy.

Why do you say carbon removal not carbon offsetting?

We say removal not offsetting because we believe that offsetting is just putting a plaster on the problem. We want to help people understand their impact and then simultaneously reduce it whilst investing in nature based solutions at the same time. One cannot be down in the place of the other. We also want to invest in assets that physically remove carbon rather than just avoid emissions, which a lot of traditional carbon credits support.

What is climate positive?

Climate positive means you are removing more carbon than you are producing. Pretty cool, right? However, this isn’t a quick process. Natural assets have to grow and we have to make sure they’re protected so they become carbon stores over time, so they can function as carbon sinks long-term.

Is this just offsetting with a different name?

No, we want to help and encourage businesses to go above and beyond just carbon offsetting. We show you where your impact is so you really know what mark you’re making on the planet. We help you invest in the nature-based solutions that will pack the biggest punch when addressing the climate crisis. And we don’t just balance your impact – we help you become climate positive. The natural assets you invest in will sequester more carbon than you are producing over their growth life. And don’t worry, we factor in buffers in case anything happens to the assets. Also, once you know your impact, you can choose to address areas that could be reduced to make your impact smaller. Which means you’ll be on your way to becoming climate positive, and you’ll be reducing the physical impact of your business alongside this.

Is stopping climate change really possible?

Obviously climate change is a really complex problem and it’s going to take a whole range of solutions – this is just one of them. We have to make sure we are reducing our impact as well as investing in these natural climate solutions.

But to break it down, nature-based solutions can help to address the climate crisis in three main ways:

1. Capturing and storing additional carbon from the atmosphere as well as storing existing carbon
2. Reducing GHGs related to land use changes
3. Improving the resilience of ecosystems and communities

Is Earthly a registered charity?

No we’re a limited company, which may seem weird considering our mission. But with the mounting time pressure on the climate crisis we need the ability to gather investment and expand our team so we can help more and more businesses join the natural revolution.

How much of my money goes to Earthly?

We charge a 20% fee on top of the project fees. 3% of this covers our transaction costs and FX costs. The rest is used towards Earthly scaling including our marketing as well as developing our technology so we can continue to help tackle the climate crisis.

Can I remove more carbon than I produce?

Do you even need to ask? Of course you can! The more carbon you want to remove, the better – you will be a true climate champion.

Why are you a bit more expensive than your competitors?

Good question. We are a bit more expensive than our competitors, yes. But with good reason. Nature-based solutions projects are that bit more expensive because of trickier implementation. We could be as cheap as others but we didn’t want to support much cheaper traditional carbon credits because we don’t believe in what they do. So you pay for the natural element rather than us wanting more money.
